"A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other's lives. It is the knowledge that people have of each other, their concern for each other, their trust in each other, the freedom with which they come and go among themselves."

  1. Today was probably one of my favorite days of the trip. We got to go to a mining museum, which was really cool. I thought it was neat how they set up different exhibits (e.g. miner's house, hospital, school, etc.).

Getting to read the letters that miners wrote to their families when they were trapped in the mines was really sad. Sometimes it's difficult for me to learn about the past and understand how real these people were. The people were very real. The mines that they worked in existed. The danger was real. And the fear and the letters were real.

Professor Niles brought up a good point when she said we don't realize how much work goes into getting coal. I think we do take a lot for granted. The museum and the ride through Protal 31 really got me thinking!
