"A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other's lives. It is the knowledge that people have of each other, their concern for each other, their trust in each other, the freedom with which they come and go among themselves."

  2. Hello from Kentucky! The meeting with Allicance was very interesting. They have thier opinion about stip mining and we definitely have ours, but it was a pleasant meeting. Laura the Gainsway race horse farm is awesome, I took lots of pictures. We visited between the racing season and breeding season so they let us walk through and see a few of the Stallions. We also got to see some yearlings. They took us to see the graves of Regret and Winning Colors which are two pretty famous horses.
We traveled to Berea to Boone Tavern. Loyal Jones came to paint a picture of the appalachian people and their values so we can understand the cultural identity of the people we are immersed in. Meeting Loyal was a true pleasure and a highlight of the trip. I will sum it up to say that he gave us an insight into the Appalachian people that we will be able to use with all people in our career. He has a true passion for the land that has made him.
Boone Tavern is a quaint lovely place and I enjoyed rocking on the front porch.

  3. I just love spin doctors...the kind of people who could sell snow to an eskimo and convince them they were not getting shaved ice. It is amazing how large corperations can manipulate numbers, show some high tech fertilization techniques that temporarily hide environmental destruction and hand out freebies with pizza:) Kuddos coal company...way to go! My kids can stain my fence in your shirts but will kentucky's grandbabies be able to drink the water in fifteen years, will it smell like "fart" water? These are the sarcastic numbers that flit through my brain as I listen to presentation after presentation.

Boone Tavern was a amazing place but what tied the experience together was Mr. Loyal coming and reciting poetry. What an amazing tale he spins of faith, family and attachment to place.
Listening to him after spending a day tramping around town with Alyssa what well spent.
